What your Desires and Fantasies might be telling you
Have you ever had a fantasy that surprised you? Did it feel exciting or confusing? Perhaps it made you wonder: "Why would I be turned on by that?"
For many people, fantasy is one of the most private parts of their inner world. Yet it is also one of the most universal. Almost everyone has fantasies. Almost everyone has desires they have never shared. Almost everyone has wondered whether their thoughts are normal. The answer is reassuring. Human sexuality is wonderfully diverse.
Fantasy is often far less about what we literally want to do and far more about the emotions and experiences we long to feel.
Fantasy Is not a to-do list
One of the biggest misconceptions about fantasy is that it represents a secret wish to act something out. That is not always true. Many fantasies remain exciting precisely because they stay in the imagination. Others contain elements we enjoy thinking about but would never want to experience in real life. Fantasy often works symbolically. For example, a fantasy about being pursued may not be about the pursuer” It may be about feeling intensely desired. A fantasy about surrender may not be about giving up control in life: It may be about taking a break from responsibility. A fantasy about power or multiple partners may not be about dominance: It may be about confidence, certainty or freedom.
When we stop taking fantasy literally, we can become more curious about what it might be communicating.
What is the feeling beneath the fantasy?
Instead of asking: "What does this fantasy mean?", try asking: "How does this fantasy make me feel?" Excited? Desired? Free? Powerful? Adventurous? Safe enough to let go?
Many people discover that the emotional experience underneath the fantasy is the real source of erotic charge. The fantasy itself is simply the vehicle.
Invitation to curiosity
Relationship therapist Esther Perel often encourages people to explore what happens inside them when they feel most alive and most erotic. Not just sexually but energetically, emotionally and psychologically. When do you feel most attractive, confident, playful, free? Sometimes the answers have very little to do with sex and everything to do with identity. For some people, desire awakens when they feel adventurous. For others, when they feel admired or deeply seen or accepted. Fantasy can offer clues about these deeper longings.
Common themes in fantasy
While everyone's desires are unique, certain themes appear again and again - being desired, wanted, chosen, pursued, appreciated, powerful. 0What turns you on? Novelty and adventure? New experiences? Breaking routines? Feeling confident? Feeling held? Emotional connection? Physical validation? Mystery and anticipation?
If you would like to better understand your own fantasies, consider these questions.
What fantasies return repeatedly?
What emotions do they create?
What parts feel exciting?
What parts feel uncomfortable?
What do I imagine experiencing emotionally?
What am I longing for in those moments?
What needs or desires might be hiding underneath the storyline?
There is no need to judge the answers.
How exploration might look
For some people, exploration begins through sensual massage and relaxing into touch - learning what feels good and discovering what awakens pleasure and presence. For others, gentle kink exploration offers an opportunity to safely explore themes such as anticipation, power, surrender, confidence, trust or playfulness. And for some, intimate encounters provide space to step outside routine and experience connection, flirtation, chemistry and curiosity in a relaxed and accepting environment.
Final thoughts
Fantasy is not evidence that something is wrong with you - often it is evidence that there is more of you to discover. Rather than asking whether a fantasy is good or bad, normal or unusual, perhaps a more interesting question is: "What might this be teaching me about myself?"
Warmly,
