Polarity, attraction, and chemistry - what most people get wrong

Spend any time exploring relationship advice and you'll eventually encounter the concept of polarity. For some, it's the missing piece that explains attraction and chemistry. For others, it's little more than outdated gender stereotypes dressed up as wisdom. As with many things, the truth is more nuanced. I believe polarity can absolutely create spark, but I also think many people misunderstand what polarity actually is.

What is polarity?

At its simplest, polarity is the attraction that can arise from difference. Difference creates tension, tension, creates movement, and movement creates energy - like a dance. If both people are doing exactly the same thing at exactly the same time, there may be harmony, but there is often very little charge. When one person leads and another follows, even temporarily, something dynamic emerges. That dynamic can feel exciting, playful, erotic.

Polarity is not necessarily about gender or gender roles, it’s about contrast. It’s not masculine men and feminine women - this is perhaps the biggest misconception.

Popular discussions often frame polarity as a strong masculine man and a soft feminine woman. For some heterosexual couples, that dynamic feels natural and deeply satisfying. For others, it feels restrictive or entirely inaccurate. Many women are decisive, ambitious and powerful. Many men are emotionally expressive, nurturing and receptive. Some relationships involve two highly driven people, may be same-sex couples, and shift and evolve depending on circumstance.

Polarity is not about fitting into a life role. It’s a tool for creating an erotic dance.

Why polarity can feel exciting

Many people spend their days operating in predictable ways. They manage responsibilities, solve problems, make decisions, care for others. Polarity can offer temporary relief from these familiar patterns: The person who leads all day may enjoy being guided, the person who carries emotional labour may enjoy being cared for, the person who usually follows may enjoy taking charge. The attraction often comes not from the role itself, but from the contrast. It allows us to experience different aspects of ourselves.

Polarity is only one path To chemistry

This is another important myth to challenge. Polarity is not the only source of attraction.

Sexual chemistry can emerge through many different pathways, including emotional intimacy, vulnerability, novelty and surprise, shared values, humour and playfulness, intellectual connection, physical touch, and embodied presence. Some couples have enormous polarity and very little intimacy. Others have deep intimacy and very little polarity. The strongest relationships often draw from several sources at once.

When polarity becomes a problem

Like many powerful ideas, polarity can become distorted. It becomes less useful when it turns into rigid gender expectations, one person consistently has less power, people feel trapped in roles, it is used to justify poor behaviour, or flexibility disappears. Healthy polarity is dynamic, fluid, and not prescribed. The healthiest couples often move between energies naturally. And at different moments, different people lead, different people soften, different people hold the centre.

A gentle invitation

If you're curious about polarity, try replacing the question: "Am I masculine or feminine?" with: "What creates aliveness between us?" For some couples, that aliveness comes from contrast, for others, it comes from intimacy, and for many it’s a blend of both.

Final thoughts

Polarity isn't a rulebook for relationships. It's simply one lens through which we can understand attraction and desire. When approached with curiosity rather than rigidity, it can help us better understand what creates spark, connection and aliveness in ourselves and our relationships.

Warmly,
Sabine x
