Why Fantasy Matters More Than You Think
Fantasy often receives an unfair reputation. Many people worry that having fantasies means something is wrong with them, something is missing from their relationships, or that their desires are somehow unusual. In reality, fantasy is one of the most natural expressions of imagination.
It allows us to explore possibilities, to experiment safely and visit ideas, emotions and experiences that may never appear in our everyday lives.
Fantasy isn't something to fear but to understand.
The difference between fantasy and reality
One of the most important things to recognise is that fantasy and reality serve different purposes. A fantasy is not necessarily a blueprint. It isn't always something we want to recreate exactly as imagined. Often the appeal lies in the emotions it evokes, the feeling of being desired, the excitement of anticipation, the thrill of surrender, the confidence of taking charge, the pleasure of being seen and in full expression without shame. Fantasy gives us access to emotional experiences that can be difficult to express in ordinary life.
What our fantasies can teach us
Sometimes fantasies offer valuable clues about ourselves. Someone who fantasises about being pursued may be longing to feel desired. Someone who imagines surrendering control may spend much of their life carrying enormous responsibility. Someone drawn to authority or confidence may be exploring aspects of themselves that are rarely expressed elsewhere. Fantasy doesn't always reveal what we want to do, sometimes it reveals what we need to feel - which can be far more interesting.
Fantasy and self-acceptance
Many people carry unnecessary shame about their desires. They worry they are strange, too much, not enough, different. The truth is that human desire is wonderfully diverse. The more people I meet, the more convinced I become that most of us are far more alike than we imagine. We all want connection, acceptance, permission to be ourselves. Fantasy is often one of the places where those desires quietly emerge.
The importance of play
Adults are remarkably good at responsibility - we manage businesses, families, mortgages, deadlines, crises. But we forget to play. Fantasy creates space for imagination and play and allows us to step outside routine and experience something unexpected. That playfulness can be surprisingly nourishing.
Final thoughts
Some fantasies remain fantasies forever. Others inspire exploration. Some evolve over time. Others fade away entirely. What matters is approaching desire and fantasy with curiosity rather than judgement.
Fantasy is one of the places where our imagination and our desires meet. It asks nothing of us except honesty and curiosity. And occasionally, it reveals something beautiful about who we are beneath the roles we play every day.
Warmly,
